Artist biography

Simon Brushfield was born in Geelong on the 27th July, 1970 and travelled Victoria widely receiving a broad education before arriving in Sydney to further develop his artistic talents. Fascinated at the age of 5 by dripping coloured paint onto a spinning canvas at the local fete, Simon’s destiny was set in place. Attending Ballarat University College in Victoria, he was awarded a Bachelor of Visual Arts and decided to further his study at the University of Technology, Sydney graduating with a Masters in Design majoring in “humanities collective unconscious” for his final thesis.

At the age of 30 Simons life was turned around through an intriguing sequence of events. “During the year 2000, I had three amazing dreams which happened in the space of approximately 3 months, they changed my life and my art forever. The first vivid dream I had was the feeling of these firm hands on my shoulders and a deep authoritative voice saying directly to me, “Who died for you on the cross?” I replied, “Jesus did”. Then burst into tears in my dream.

I went about my normal daily activities a little shaken by the dream because I had never really truly believed in God - even though I have a strong catholic background. I thought God was irrelevant. For me church was very boring, old fashioned and religious. It all meant nothing to me and I never paid any attention to the bible in or out of school. So I tried Buddhism, did clairvoyants and searched for the truth my own way and ended up a spiritual mess! About a month later I received another dream. The same firm hands were on my shoulders and the same deep authoritative voice said,”Jesus is the truth.”

Again I went about my daily activities unaware of exactly what was happening to me. Until one night about three months after the first dream and the turn of the century, I received the most important experience of my life - in a dream. The previous two dreams were preparing me for what was about to happen. In my third dream Jesus was standing in front of the cupboard in my parents kitchen where all the food is kept. I was feeling lost and alone in the tv room but I saw Jesus through a port hole in the wall. Instantly I was overcome by an amazing feeling of overwhelming love and devotion for him. A depth of love that I had never experienced before that was undescribeably beautiful. I wanted and needed him. Then without thought, spirit like in the dream, I flew across the room, through the wall seeking his face with my out stretched arms. As I went to grab his face I fell into the Body of Christ!"

This sequence of dreams have had the most profound effect on my life and art. Simon says, “I love people and beauty, my paintings attempt to express human feelings and experiences with an enormously grateful heart”. He uses mixed media and vibrant rich colours to produce emotive and imaginative works of art. His sense of freedom and intuitive ways have produced a unique style of fine art. Simons works are on display in many private and corporate collections through-out Victoria, New South Wales and overseas resulting from many successful solo and group exhibitions.
